Waking Up During the Night Might Be Related to an Overactive Internal Organ

The Organ Qi Clock, also known as the Chinese Medicine Body Clock or Circadian Clock, is a concept in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that correlates each organ system with a specific time of day. According to TCM theory, the Qi (vital energy) flows through the meridians and organ systems in a cyclic pattern throughout a 24-hour period. The Organ Qi Clock is used to understand the energetic peaks and lows of each organ system and how imbalances may manifest at different times. Each organ has a two-hour time period of peak activity.


Insomnia, which refers to difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, can be associated with imbalances in the Organ Qi Clock. Understanding the Organ Qi Clock can provide insights into the potential underlying causes of insomnia and help identify appropriate treatment approaches in TCM.


Here is a general overview of the Organ Qi Clock and its association with insomnia:


11 PM to 1 AM (Gallbladder Meridian):

This time period is associated with the gallbladder and liver. If you consistently wake up or have difficulty falling asleep during this time, it may indicate imbalances in this organ. Common causes of insomnia during this time can include stress, emotional issues, and an overactive mind. The gallbladder is associated with decision-making and courage.


1 AM to 3 AM (Liver Meridian):

The liver is the primary organ associated with this time period. Insomnia during this time can be linked to liver imbalances, such as liver Qi stagnation or heat. Excessive anger, frustration, or unresolved emotional issues are often associated with insomnia at this time.


3 AM to 5 AM (Lung Meridian):

This time period is associated with the lungs and large intestine. Insomnia during this time may be related to lung imbalances, such as lung Qi deficiency or excess grief or sadness. Respiratory conditions or imbalances in the immune system can also affect sleep during this period.


It's important to note that the Organ Qi Clock is a general guideline, and individual variations can occur. In TCM, a holistic approach is taken to address the underlying imbalances contributing to insomnia. Treatment may involve acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary adjustments, lifestyle modifications, stress reduction techniques (such as meditation and qigong), and improving sleep hygiene.
